Ten Ways to Save Face on Facebook

by Peter Lloyd for IT Experts, Job Hunting

Forewarned is forearmed. And we’ve all been forewarned: Watch what you post on Facebook.

A CareerBuilder survey found that 45% of employers use social networking sites to weed out job candidates. When evaluating candidates, 29% snoop around Facebook, 26% scout LinkedIn, and 21% check out MySpace. With six of us scrambling for every job out there, all it takes is a compromising picture to make you one of the five out.

This new investigative capability is especially bad news if you’re on an Information Technology job search. That’s because 63% of IT employers screen by social network activity—the highest level in the survey. Read the rest of this entry »

Job Search Help from the Cincinnati Public Library, Part II

by Peter Lloyd for Job Hunting

In this second of three posts outlining help from The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, we look at books. All are available online, but the library will lend them to you for free. Just get them back on time.

The books, below, include career guides and cover job searching, networking, interviewing, resumes, and cover letters. More important, the recommendations come from Career Center librarians, who have had lots of experience dealing with books and the people who use them. To speak with a librarian, see Locations. Health Care: The Friday Funnies

by Peter Lloyd for Health Care, Job Benefits

I’ve been collecting cartoons on the subject of health care while posting serious overviews and commentaries. For this reason—in the most tragic dramas, there’s always a scene of comic relief. Even if it’s dark humor or bitter irony. So, in the spirit of comic relief here are links to seven health care cartoons.

What does this have to do with your job search? Just this. If you’ve tried everything else, maybe there’s a job for you in political cartooning. To see if this is the case, I’ll describe a situation or suggest a title for the cartoon. Before you take the link to it, try to imagine what you might draw. Then compare your idea to those of the greats, like Tom Toles or Mike Smith. Read the rest of this entry »

Best IT Jobs: Today and Tomorrow

by Peter Lloyd for IT Experts, Job Hunting

Baseline Magazine recently projected the prospects for information technology jobs in a Careers Slideshow titled “Where the IT Jobs Are Now”. Baseline researchers spoke with experts in IT jobs in four cities. Here’s a quick sketch of what they see ahead:

All IT jobs they looked into are holding or improving in terms of their prospects. Specifically, data management, data mining and warehousing are holding steady. Jobs in security, up. IT sourcing, vendor relationship management, networking, and wireless can expect increased demand. Web development should hold steady. Qualified quality management job seekers face a seller’s market. Jobs and salaries will be up for IT education and health care. And IT jobs in energy and the federal government will remain stable. Read the rest of this entry »

Job Search Help from the Cincinnati Public Library, Part I

by Peter Lloyd for Job Hunting

If you’re not an avid public library patron, you may think libraries just lend books. But they do that and a whole lot more. For example, The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County houses a Career Resource Center to help you in your job search efforts.

In this post, I’ll let you in on what the Cincinnati Library offers in the way of expensive and short-lived reference books. While you may be able to obtain some of these books faster online, the library holds many job search volumes that you probably don’t want to buy. Some because they cost thousands of dollars and others because they’re not only expensive, they go out of date quickly. The Public Library holds these books and will let you use them, but it does not lend them out.

In subsequent posts, I’ll write about the Library’s job search book and online resource recommendations. If you’d rather not wait, call they Cincinnati Main Library or you local branch. See Locations. Read the rest of this entry »

All Work and No Pay Makes Me a Dull Boy

by Peter Lloyd for Job Hunting

I’ve always wanted and enjoyed lots of free time. Freelance writing gave me very little at first. I was always busy. I would complain that being a free agent tied me down more than a regular, 9-to-5 kind of job. Then it ended.

When all of my freelance clients either sent me packing, stopped offering work, or closed their doors, I had all the free time I ever wanted. What did I do with it? Looked for work. Looking for work is one of the worst and ways to spend time. My job search era turned out to be one of the worst periods of my life. Read the rest of this entry »
